Family and friends gathered for the vernissage last Sunday May 30th. We were entertained with music by A' Chord East, a special thanks to Joy. We congratulate the artists exhibiting their best works of art and for many, its their first time exhibiting - and what a venue to start with, The Shenkman Arts Centre.
We had the opportunity to speak with some of the artists about their work:
Mme Aline Dubois-Belley explained to us her inspiration behind her artwork. It seems that while taking a walk in the woods with her son, he said," Mom, the light coming through the trees looks like a painting"! That thought inspired her to create "Walking with Giants" (oil on canvass). Admiring the beauty of nature, she also added "We are but a guest on this planet and just passing through".
We asked Mrs. Dorothy Garvin how her creation, "Left Hand Turn", come to be. Being right-handed, she noted that she had hurt her right arm while skating on the Rideau Canal this past winter, but still wanted to continue painting. So, her work was painted using her left hand exclusively. Great job! Who would of known.
Mrs. Shawna Holmlund tells us she loves all that is associated with nature. Her artwork is all done with coloured pencils. She has displayed her favorite pieces, "The Wayward Houseplant" and "The Houseplant Jungle".
We also approached Mme Brigitte Drole. Her displayed work is in watercolors and she uses the "negative technique". "Fidele au Rendez-vous", portrays her love of flowers especially Hemerocallis (Day Lilies). "Le petit pont oublie" portrays an abandoned bridge in a small forest, which she has admired for years. By the way, she also admits knowing the builder of such a nice bridge.
We also met Christine Gendron. She likes to experiment with different colors in acrylics. Her two pieces were done with blues in using different hues.
Anxious for spring to arrive, Diane Groulx's artwork represents places where there are no winters. For this artist, inspiration comes from talking with and seeing photographs from her cousin and friend's travels. She always asks for a souvenir from their travel destinations such as rocks or sand, which she ultimately incorporates into her work, as we witness in "Sous le bleu d'un ciel sans hiver".
We were so thrilled to converse with these fine artists. Regrettably, we did not have an opportunity to speak with everyone who displayed artworks but we saw a great diversity of art, from paintings created in watercolors, acrylics, oils and mix media, with a variety of styles from abstract to realism - with some even thinking outside of the box and others just using out of the ordinary media.
We were truly amazed by the great talent among our Arteast members. Congratulations to all!
